There are several differences between quartzite and granite. Granite gets its hardness from its quartz content, but quartzite contains more quartz per volume than granite, making it essentially a harder material. Granite is more abundant than quartzite; it is widely distributed throughout the earth's crust and forms the foundation that underlies the sedimentary rock beneath most of the continents.

In general the quartzite demands a higher cost than typical granites (there are always exceptions).

With that said the picture on top is actually the back side of a carrara marble slab (its marble). I attached a picture of quartzite.

Cost is always a factor of production cost, production output and worldwide demand. Still this is only a moderately priced material (we carry high end exotic material in the range of $100 - $250 per s/f )

I love the quartzite too, but it is very pricey. Try looking for White Springs granite. It has a white background but the veining comes in many shades - black grey taupe and all shades of brown and some burgundy, plus flecks of mica or quartz which sparkle. Look at the slabs and find one that will compliment your cabinets. I found a slab that is primarily white with beautiful veins including burgundy but some are primarily black and grey. There is a lot of variation in color between lots so keep looking.
