Ha ha. Seeing Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation in the attic. That scene from the movie is one of my favorite. I usually end up in tears looking at old pictures. We always hid presents in the attic!

Attics are great storage areas - a temporary store for furniture, odds and ends, books and anything that just doesn't fit at the moment. Every January, I've boxed off the previous years papers, letters, various odds and ends, children's drawings, art works and scribbles and anything of interest including catalogues, headline newspapers etc. Clearly mark the year on the side and tops of the box and then store it away. Take it out again in 10-15-20 plus years time and it's an amazing step back in time.

Items which we think are commonplace and nothing remarkable today are worthy of wonder 20 plus years in the future. I've returned letters and drawings made by my now adult children and there's fascination, delight and the appreciation of passing years. Those scraps of paper that we tend to dispose of today could be very worthwhile as a memory trigger in the future.

Word of warning though - beware of hoarding - if it's not something you want to keep today or it needs to be retained for legal/financial reasons - bin it! Also be aware that attics can become quite hot in mid-summer, so be careful of storing papers and never, ever anything flamable or 'meltable' like record albums and singles!

Here's how we store our decorative pillows when they are not on the bed. I think it was intended as a magazine holder and I think I bought it from Sam's Club but am not sure because it was so long ago.

We live in a 130 year old house and as much as I love the old wood floors, they were crazy cold during this winter (we have lived here 9 months so it was our first winter). I decided I wanted sheepskin rugs on each side of the bed. After shopping for 2 double end-to-end rugs on Amazon, and all over the place, in dark brown, I was about ready to commit when I decided to check Costco. They sell sheepskin rugs in larger sizes but they did have the chocolate brown I wanted. I purchased a quad (4 skins sewn together) for about the same price I was finding the doubles priced everywhere else. The day it was delivered, I took my seam ripper and ripped out the seam down the center. I now have 2 long rugs on either side of the bed and they feel so good on our feet when we get out of bed! This worked out so well that I purchased another from Costco in the natural creamy color and did the same thing for one of our guest rooms. I will probably do the same for the other guest room. We had a party this weekend and our guests absolutely loved the rugs!

Oh, and on my bedside table lies the remote control for our ceiling fan! As others have commented, it is absolutely a necessity in TX! I had a small ceiling fan in my bathroom years ago and loved it. When we get around to renovating our bathroom, we will definitely have one in there too.

That plan is actually the electrical plan so the arcs represent the wiring from fixture to fixture. We used that one because it's the closest to as built we had. The kitchen in particular changed many times during the process until we settled on the final result. Even in this plan you can see the island is not what we ended up building.

The rug does - it's actually plastic! But fabric on the chairs needs to be taken off the frames during bad weather. The sun doesn't seem to hurt them though.

All vintage materials whether its a piece of wood furniture , a crockery or anything for that matter have their own importance with respect to its emotional value, price and even beauty. Sadly, I've found that my homes have looked most awesome when preparing to sell. I think it's a combination of two factors: 1) finally finishing all those little things that you've been meaning to get around to and 2) staging the house for sale (with or without a professional stager). Other things that make sense include:

Decluttering with an eye towards what you need to store v. what you need to let go (give away, sell, toss)

Like a previous poster noted, it's really good to bring all your favorite accent pieces together---to dust, clean, and think about how to re-position/purpose them. I do this every Christmas holiday season and love that the things that I love can be used in creative ways

Deep, deep, deep cleaning--best done by professionals

Window cleaning--depending on your windows, again best done by professionals

I love old wood furniture & old tools I can hang on my wall. That's about where I draw the line. The thought of a used couch that who knows what happened on it just creeps me out & I agree about possible infestations too. If I knew the original owner I wouldn't care, but not when its a mystery! I feel the same about clothes. And a used pillow? Not on your life! I don't want my face where someone else's face or worse was! I guess I just have issues with things that have fabric on them. Example: I have a living room chair in my house that was the perfect place to change my kids diapers when they were little. I did cover it before, but I know it has a little pee soaked into it (yes I cleaned it whenever that would happen & it has never stunk). I'm not going to give that to someone else, but a lot of people would & not think anything of it.
