Here, here! Everything done well requires time, practice, patience, curiosity, and experimentation. You may be willing to start sewing your own pillows and work your way up to upholstery. But if you really need Grandma's rocker re-finished in time for the baby to arrive, get the artisan on it who knows exactly how to bring out the best in that beloved little piece for you. You're still being creative, still bringing your idea to life; and collaborating with dedicated, passionate people along the way. Priceless.

Thanks for writing this article. I've long been drawn to DIY and watched every show ever on renovating homes. For the past three years I've been DIYing my own kitchen. It's been a fun and rewarding project, but slow. I've stuck to things that are within my ability to do properly, which has limited me in materials I can work with. On the other hand, even with all the extra expenses, I've ended up with a really fun kitchen without spending the tens of thousands most people do on a remodel. And it's been a fun creative project.

Probably my biggest gripe about how DIY is promoted is that they never price the cost of the tools into the projects, or the time to go out and get those little parts or tools you may not have on hand.

The other thing that people don't think about with DIY is that often you are learning on the job. The worst DIY projects I see are tile, which is deceptively simple looking to do but - do you really want you first attempt ever at it permanently installed in your bathroom? At least with paint and trim you can redo them right, but tile you are kind of stuck with it.

Another issue with my own home is that because we live in the house and have no options for setting up a temp kitchen, each time I work on my project I have to complete take down all the food and dishes, then thoroughly clean the kitchen up and replace everything at the end of my work - so there is a lot of extra time involved in prepping the space.

I'll DIY again but being aware now of the pitfalls, I'll probably try to purchase a home before I move in and do the work while it's empty.
