If you're looking to lighten your space without investing a significant sum of money (by replacing the kitchen cabinets, for example), there are a few tricks you can try.

Adding lighting to the space would be an economical suggestion. If it's not possible to have an electrician come in to replace out-dated fluorescents or add recessed cans, try above-cabinet lighting (such as light rope) or under-cabinet lighting. Lighting the space well will go a long way in brightening it. If you have limited options for where you can add lighting, try introducing just one great statement piece, like this one: Leesburg Contemporary Kitchen - Banquette. This eye-catcher will both produce light AND distract you from the less desirable finishes in your kitchen!

I would also suggest trying a new paint color. Use a light neutral, as it may be hard to find a brighter hue that matches the dark items in your kitchen. Stick with a light grey, beige, tan, or off-white. A cozy color that is not too 'colorful' will make the space look fresh. Using a light paint (or even a light backsplash tile), you can actually "embrace" the dark fixtures/cabinets in your kitchen, such as in the photo above, or these: Project: Leesburg Contemporary Kitchen

Last but not least, if you're able, you can try replacing the panels in your upper cabinetry with an opaque or frosted glass. This will make the cabinetry look less 'heavy,' while also giving the light a reflective surface to bounce off of, brightening the room. See: Vallejo Street

Hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for the question! The accent tile strip in this shower is by Daltile -- it is called "Universal Accent" from the Salerno series. It comes in 3" x 12" strips.

The step treads are carpeted to match the guest room below. The stairs were custom built- field constructed walls (2"x3" studs mounted on the skirting of the staircase support the wall) out of bendable plywood.

You can find the information you need in a couple of different ways depending on how you are using Houzz. If you are on a computer, click on the "more info" link. If you are using the app, tap on the photo. Either way there should be a link to a vendor or a store. You should be able to get further information by following that link.

We actually fabricate and assemble millwork as part of our renovations. However, for a local reference to simply provide great quality built-ins, try Steve at SCB Custom Woodworking in Silver Spring (http://www.scbwoodworking.com/).
