I spent six months sorting my stuff in anticipation of downsizing from a 2,400 sq ft home to a 735 sq ft cottage. I made a floor plan to figure out what furniture I could fit, and actually did a trial run of how I would store everything before packing it up. I set up "exit stations" for my stuff (dump, recycle, donate, consign, return, give away) and was able to move things through the pipeline with regular runs to these places. I also calculated the total square footage I could take, based on the size of the moving truck I was willing to drive.

Even with all of this ruthless decluttering, I'm still up to my chin in moving boxes, after finally arriving at my new home three days ago. My Achilles heel is what scrapbookers and paper crafters call "ephemera." I'm getting the hiccups as I type this! I guess I'll know in a couple of weeks whether I let go of enough.

But I will say that handmade cards instead of gifts have been a big hit with friends and family, especially in the digital age. And it is quite a thrill to discover them displayed long after the holiday or event has passed. I don't think they are the kind of gift people feel obligated to keep, either. At least they don't take too much room if they do.

I am horrible about getting rid of things. I know all the mantras, the techniques and could write an advice column on how to approach it all -- but I keep avoiding coming to terms with it all.

But I am better about not accepting things I don't even like. On a cruise we were given tchotchkes every day - promotional stuff -- and I can boast that except for a CD everything got left or was given away ( what a waste, though!). On the matter of T-shirts for every find raiser - please - if you are responsible - just stop. Save the money. Charge me a little fee for the pleasure of refusing to wear a tshirt!

And when it comes to buying more, It is best to totally avoid temptation - no garage sales, no stores unless I have a specific objective.

If you're looking for products from an earlier time, check out THE VERMONT COUNTRY STORE.com.
(all small letters.) They have beauty products ranging from Evening in Paris cologne to Tangee lipstick and more! Fun to browse. Also have clothing that's hard-to-find anymore. Great
gowns, robes too, which I've ordered for older friends. Good sales too!

@revss I have used Vermont Country Store as well for gifts for The Olds (as they kids say). They have a lot of good brands that older people recognize, and the old timey candy brands I think would be appreciated by a lot of older people at Christmas.

Just saw this on The Grommet website and my first thought was, as it so often is, "Reading Nook!"

Custom Color and Art
An important point made in the article is putting up a sample and living with it. Seeing it at different times of day and weather, viewing it from another room, all critical to getting a feel for the pattern and color. Good article!

I love the idea if low hanging bed side lamps. I'd never thought I would like that, but now it is a must have feature as part of my bedroom re-design.

I am glad that the article acknowledges the difficulty of doing this with small children. Mine are too young to leave me alone. If I asked them to leave me alone they would not understand and would be terribly hurt. The article had good advice for making this work even in situations like mine: it doesn't need to be all day; sneak in mini-retreats when no one else is in the house, etc. This I can do. Thanks for a good article.

You had me until grocery shopping. Not much of a retreat if I'm making all the food. ;)
