The Sky is the Limit Design Idon;t have a name for it. I just call it a 'pinwheel' for my own good, but that's not really a technical term that a tiler would know what to do with it...

Kitchen Design Fix: How to Fit an Island Into a Small Kitchen

Scott Cook & I would argue that 12 feet wide & up aren't particularly small to begin with.
The Sky is the Limit Design Scott, don't you think you are getting a bit caught up in the term 'small'? It's a subjective term, and honestly, most of the kitchens, even a so-called small one, in North America are most likely larger than what we really need to create a healthy meal.

The Sky is the Limit Design @ Shirley Moore - try and locate a stone WHOLESALER in your area. Regular stone manufacturers have usually limited space and can't show the real breath of available stone - therefore you often see the same old, same old....

And, as mentioned above, make sure to check out the different lines of Quartz. There is more out there than the just the industry giants Cambria, Caesarstone and Zodiaq, and it's worth while to research them. Quartz is supposedly ( I am a skeptic ) the hardest counter material, because it is made with about 90 % of ground quartz particles, and quartz is the hardest particulate in granite. It's a very dense product, warm to the touch ( as opposed to natural stone), and available in a very wide range of 'designs'.

I haven't researched the existing houzz ideabooks about counter materials, but I know this topic has been elaborated on before. If you go on my own site, I have an open ideabook about counter top materials on there as well, that goes into issues around the various products including wood, cement, corian.

The Sky is the Limit Design :) you know, I do have to be politically correct when writing...but it is indeed retro - just do a search for retro stoves ( or retro-ranges) and see for yourself! what I liked about the retro design - those backguards are often arched instead of simply straight, which is a really nice touch.

catwhit LOVE my induction cooktop. Bought from IKEA, it is a Whirlpool, as are all their appliances. Heating/cooling is as fast as gas, but without a flame.

I understand that the latest inductions cooktops are being designed without hobs. The entire surface will be useable; the appliance senses the size of your cooking vessel. Great for huge grill pans.

I found a very useful item, called a SCRUNGE, a sponge-like thing designed to clean induction and ceramic glass cooktops. It is amazing... Requires only water, and will even clean off burned on milk, without scratching.

The Sky is the Limit Design Do NOT attempt to retrofit a towelbar on your glass door! At least not if it is - as it should be - a tempered glass panel, as it would "explode". Those towelbars need to be specified and drilled for when ordering glass enclosure systems.
C & S Shower Door Inc. Sometimes you can order just a new door and towel bar if you have a large enclosure. This should save a bit of money although the labor will still cost you.

lauraclaycomb I don't understand why people want to put chalk in their children's bedrooms - long exposure to chalk dust is NOT good for growing lungs, and if your child is asthmatic, it could be disastrous! Looks cool, but all those particles in the air... ?

The Sky is the Limit Design pretty much each and every applince the client wished for... it's my only wall in that huge space...microwave, winefridge, cofeemaker, 2 ovens, fridge. in hindsight i really wished the client would have selected models from the same manufacturer, though - then there would have been more consistency in the design language of those appliances. having said that - when clients do their research on appliances they often rather opt to listen to a consumer report than go for looks.
Futuro Futuro Kitchen Range Hoods Very often, customers will choose appliances from different manufacturers, because no single company excels at making every type of appliance, so they choose the highest-rated refrigerator, the highest-rated range, etc. - regardless of what badge is on it.

Also, the customer's personal preference for specific features might override any considerations of design.

They may go for a Wolf range over a stylish Italian cooktop, because they value the strength of build over elegance... but they may choose a slim Italian range hood to go over that range, because American range hoods are gigantic and not too design-conscious.

They may choose a Miele coffee station for their cup of morning joe, but also get a GE Cafe fridge with integrated programmable water heater so they can have precise temperature water for their baby's formula... and so on, and so on, it's pretty much endless.

We sell designer Italian range hoods, and since we provide personalized consultations, we get to know our clients' appliance selections pretty well. We've seen pretty much every combination of our hoods with ranges & cooktops, from elegant glass induction to massive pro-style Wolf and Capital gas ranges.

It's almost never about the brand, or color-matching, it's most often about what will keep "this particular chef" happy. If someone wants to pair a $ 100,000 handmade Molteni range (pic attached) that looks like it time-warped out of 18th century with an ultra-thin stainless-steel range hood inspired by science fiction - it may not be the most "congruent" solution, but, hey, it's their house!

The Sky is the Limit Design I don't quite understand the comment regrding the drawers not lining up with the rangetop.
other than that - I would never recommend going higher than 36 1/2" on a regular kitchen countertop - unless I would be working for 7' tall people... This has to do with sheer human ergonomics - whe you angle your elbow at 90 degree you want to be about 3-6" above countertopheight for 'healthy' food prepration movements.
Asian clients might want to even consider 34" height being the correct height for them.
Another option: You could drop the counter around a rangetop, as the Europeans sometimes do - they sometimes go down to 30 or 33" around a cooktop in order to allow you better access into high pots.

Hope this helps. And yes - I actually had the shllow drawers made to match the height of the rangetop front exactly.
joyful_lady Maybe it is simply the way I perceive the angle. It looked to me that the drawers were not lined up directly below the range but it could be a perception thing from the angle and the way my eyes see it.

Thank you for your quick response and the insight about the height. It is helpful.

The Sky is the Limit Design Honed absolute black granite is the WORST material to use for a kitchen counter. I had a young client who wanted to use it for a wonderful modern kitchen. Even after being sealed really well the stone shows even watermarks - like a clean plate taken out of the dishwasher! Needless to say - the client was very disappointed within a few dys of the installation. Sorry about that - I really wish things would be different.
Funilly enough one of the quartz manufacturers came actually up with a quartz that mimicks the honed black - and the rep who showed me the sample saw my eyes lighten up because I thought I had finally found a good substitute for the real thing.... She literally begged me not ever to use it because it is so high maintenance.

dooders1981 Try looking at Super White granite. Look at a full slab, not a small sample. I am currently looking for granite for my new kitchen ( white cabinets) and I was looking for the Carrera look in granite. The super white I looked at it sooooo close and beautiful. I actually have 4 slabs on hold until the other one I loved comes in so I can compare ( the other one is called Fantasy Brown- not brown at all, similar to Carrera but e few soft brown veins through it). Good luck, I found the granite to be the most difficult decision.

bonniezemont Personally I love a traditional solid wood (I prefer Oak, but mostly because of my own home style) and user friendly/cleanable solid quality surfaces in my kitchen! Nothing compares to natural wood and stone in my opinion! I just dont get the unusable crap they keep trying to push on us!
baui I do not usually make negative comments because I try to keep an open mind to new things. The 1st photo however, does not look flattering in the picture. It looks like stripes of yellow tape on the floor. I am sure it looks better in person just not in this picture.

Bonniezemont: I understand that you do not get it because not everyone is in the same climate or living situation you are in. Some places need materials that are more resilient to harsh climates. Some lifestyles need maintenance-free environment. Some people just simply cannot afford to get hardwood or real stone, instead opt for the alternatives that can help achieve the ambience they desire.
