Lewis / Schoeplein architects

The partnership of Lewis / Schoeplein Architects was founded on the belief that good design is paramount to a successful project. We strive to produce projects that seamlessly combine beauty and functionality as an end product, and use effective team relationships as a means to that end. As a firm we are particularly interested in the adaptation of physical spaces to sustainably meet the demands of modern life. We believe there is a need to foster and encourage human interaction, particularly as our environments become more technologically based. We believe a physically present society is important, and our projects look to create places where we can not only comfortably use our smart phones, but also comfortably put them down.

Lewis / Schoeplein architects Those are Tolix chairs... we love them too! The ones in the picture may be antiques, but you can buy them new at Pottery Barn or Design Within Reach. About $250.

JMittman Designs I've participated in many a tweechat on Twitter. They are fast, dynamic, and last only one hour. I am picturing 982 opinions without time for any resolution or discussion!

Lewis / Schoeplein architects It is great if you are tall, as it makes it easier to work in the kitchen. The main problem you will face is that appliances are designed to fit 36" high counters. Dishwashers have feet that are somewhat adjustable, but you might have a gap at the top under the counter. The range is a bigger issue. You may need to prop it up on feet so that it is the same height as the counter (we have done this before, very very carefully!). Alternately, it may be easier to install a cooktop and wall ovens so you avoid this altogether.

Real estate people will tell you to consider resale, but we always say it is best to design for yourself. If you love it, someone else will too. :)

onthefence @ Lewis/Schoeplein - I've seen photos of quite a few raised dishwashers. For people with back issues, I think this is a great idea. I'd do this in my own kitchen if we had a different layout!

You make a good point about the range though. As you've said - a cooktop and wall oven would be the best option.
