Triangle Brick Company As a brick manufacturer, we love the look of natural brick and its durability. However, if you do decide to paint the brick, please be prepared for increased maintenance. According to The Brick Industry Association, “Most paint authorities agree that, once painted, exterior masonry will require repainting every three to five years.”

kevin_laurentian yeah a new porch light fixture is coming - my sister smashed the one currently up while trying to clean it . I guess in the end all that matters to me is that the pinkish disgusting colour is gone!

Sheila Rowan Congratulations, it looks sooo much better with the new paint job, but I think there is still room for improvement; I would emphasize its midcentury style by removing the shutters and getting a new door with a more spare, linear style. And check out modern landscaping ideas on Houzz.

Since Triangle Brick did not post this picture, we can't positively identify the brick. However, it looks very similar to our Charleston brick. I've attached a detailed image, but if you would like more information, please go to our website: www.trianglebrick.com.

julierossfuller Thanks everyone for your comments, here are some additional photos. The house is West facing. Definitely painting the front door as well. Very open to color, so please suggest any favorites!

Sharon Charboneau, RESA Pro, Interior Stylist You have a charming house. From pix, it has a welcoming feel to it. I am no colour expert, I just know what I like, so I will leave colour recommendations to others.
For curb appeal, I would suggest: replace concrete walk with flagstone or pavers which complement colour of brick. I like the way the path connect from driveway to front of house sitting area, then to front door. Nice touch.
The current front door is too dark. It appears there is a black iron? 1st door. If yes, decide whether you need that to remain or not. It blocks the actual door.
I reviewed your paint chips. I would recommend lighter/ brighter colours that work with brick better.
My advice to clients has always been to paint garage door complementary colour to siding on house so it disappears. A garage door is not a feature one wants to draw attention to, whereas the front door should be a colour that stands out from the brick & says Welcome!
I look forward to following your post for colour recommendations. One suggestion, you can review front door colurs on Houzz & google front door colours and also Feng Shui. They will give you feedback on colour to use for west facing houses and they take into consideration the roof colour, especially if it is a new roof.
The one lamp post looks a bit off balance. You can get another one, remove it & add lower path lights...lots of options.
Not seeing any porch lights? If you are planning to add, try to keep the lighting in same family, material & colour for continuity.

joansahmed I would paint it white or cream and paint the shutters and around door a happy blue or green.

amjwpe I adore the look of painted brick but as someone above said, be prepared to repaint often, which can be pretty expensive. Having lived in a brick house for 30+ years, my advice would be to first try updating without painting the brick. Maybe use the gray of the roof as a jumping-off point and paint the trim gray? Also, would it be possible to install double doors where the front door is? I'm thinking gray windows, garage door, fascia, etc. and black shutters. Then you could consider a contrasting color for the door/s, perhaps burgundy or even stained wood if the door is elaborate enough. Then if you still want to paint the brick, revisit the idea. After painting it, there's no easy way to turn back.

Stephen Chuilli great design commentary..thank you. Yes I am thinking s smaller shed dormer, maybe 6 feet in width. I will try to use awning windows in those three..they are twice the price but will be well worth it.

Triangle Brick Company I love your house! I would like to suggest removing the awnings completely in order to open up the front of the house. Replace the existing siding above the brick with shakes. Paint the shakes a color that you love and you have yourself a lovely cottage home.

Triangle Brick Company What a wonderful house! I would like to suggest keeping the white color on the siding & painting the shutters an interesting color. There are so many options for you, simply choose a color that you love. I would remove the awkward shutters on the tower portion of the house. May I suggest using flashed (multi-colored) brick pavers in a herringbone pattern on the driveway leading up to the entrance of the house. The paved driveway will make the home more welcoming and define the area that is the entrance.

gypsyrose17 I think just some contrasting trim and add a railing onto the porch. Personally I think I would do white siding, yellow trim and a red door and eliminate the shutters entirely unless they are functional. Keep it simple and let the house shine.

Triangle Brick Company I agree with nancy22032. Select the lightest color in the brick and paint the trim and shutters. Choose a mid-range or darker color in the brick for the garage door.

Scott Design, Inc. Consider adding forged iron hardware to your shutters...pintels and shutter dogs. It would work nicely with the wrought iron railing on the portico. Once you lighten the color of your shutters, you will see this attention to detail.

tkjs68 I'm not a professional decorator but a few simple ideas to start:
I. Paint house mid tone from brick or complimentary colour
2. Paint shutters, lightest tone from bricks
3. Paint down pipe similar to brick colour to camouflage it
4. Garage door same as main house colour not a feature or new door with clear panel to let light in
5. Path from curb to door bordered with small flowering shrubs. W hat grows best locally?
6. Two ornamental trees on either side of path.
7. Two ornamental shrubs in feature pots at front door or porch
8. New letter box, more formal in keeping with style of home at the new front path colour as main house or shutters
9. Black railing, paint as shutters or change material or add black iron feature to shutters, door knocker,
10. Two large black lantern lights either side of front door
11. New feature door colour not the same as house and shutters (POP)
12. Porch and shutters could be either main house colour or shutter colour depending if you want to highlight it as feature
13. New large welcome mat
14. When I was landscaping my property, the best advice I was given was drive around town and to look at what grows well locally in public parks and around buildings as planted by the council or other professional groups.
Good luck.

libradesigneye You can stain brick if you decide to change, but what you have is nice and bright and lends itself to cottage style with your charming bow window.
Two levels of fix.
I would focus on changing the entry door and house light and numbers. Black, traditional hanging lantern light, and new house numbers in black iron. Maybe paint the front door a deep blue-gray instead of black - like sw storm cloud http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW6249-storm-cloud/ If you want a window in your door, make sure it is a cottage style front door you buy, but just repainting will do a lot.
Second level would build / pour a new wider stoop that extended the width of your awning/(must be retractable?) and make it about 3' - 5' deeper than it is now cutting into the yard (and your pretty planter beds). Tear up the side path in, and plant foundation plantings in front over there. Instead, stairs out of the center of the new stoop towards the street then to a new curvy path over to the drive - maybe use stain to color my concrete drive like my brick as is goes past the house to the garage The new stairs might be stepped half circles with gray slate cladding and a pair of railings at 2 and 8 oclock. It looks like you have just 3 - 4 center stairs down the front with black railings on each side. Next time for new awning, consider charcoal and white cabana wide stripes.

Triangle Brick Company Wow! Congratulations on your fabulous brick home. It is stunning! I would like to recommend that you remove the shakes on the dormers. I feel that they are too casual for the Georgian Style of your home. I would suggest replacing the shakes with siding, paint it a few shades lighter than the window trim. I would also paint any white trim to match the existing windows. Landscaping will make a huge difference as well. Enjoy!

mugsy1703 The home is beautiful and has a lot of potential but it is very underwhelming right now. It needs more architectural detail. I would add trim around the windows (not shutters) and make the entrance more grand. Right now, the door seems hidden. The driveway is cool ... but needs to be defined with brick or stonework. I agree that a fountain is a must in the middle of the circular drive. I have attached a picture for inspiration.
