Whitten Architects

Business Description
Since 1986, Whitten Architects has been designing thoughtfully considered homes in New England. With a focus exclusively on residential design, we are experts in a variety of project types—from camps to cottages, new homes to historic renovations. Our work has won a number of awards over the years and has been extensively published in a variety of residential home design books and magazines.

Our like-minded team of three architects and two designers collectively offer decades of hands-on residential design and construction experience, as well as a common ethos: we believe a home should reflect its occupants, and its design should develop from an appreciation for and an understanding of its site. Using an efficient combination of hand-drawing and our office’s state-of-the-art software, we help our clients envision their home even before construction begins.

Yes, the dishwasher is within the island. If you're standing at the island sink, it is just to your left.

These black slate tiles from Sheldon Slate are natural cleft. We're fans of the slate here in New England, due to the fact that it is a local material and it is fairly cost effective. We've not heard that any of our clients were not happy with it. Slate does scratch, however the color of the material runs through the entire tile. We've not heard of any issues with Sheldon Slate tile flaking off in layers.

Thank for your question and kind comment. This project was the complete renovation of an existing waterfront cottage, here in Maine. You can see more pictures here: http://www.whittenarchitects.com/projects/pinewold_cottage

The pocket door is 2'-6" wide x 7'-0" tall. The closet itself is 4'-8" deep x 5'-4" wide (excluding the built-in shelving and cabinetry).

Per a previous question on this photo:
"In this kitchen, the kitchen countertop continues into the pantry on two walls. Affording counter space for all of the kitchen counter appliances that can sometimes clutter a kitchen. In this picture you can see a simple microwave sitting on the countertop, while around the corner there is a coffee maker, toaster, blender, etc. The microwave is not built-in and can be easily replaced when needed."

The flooring is Red Birch; but do you know what color stain it was finished with.
