Whitten Architects

Business Description
Since 1986, Whitten Architects has been designing thoughtfully considered homes in New England. With a focus exclusively on residential design, we are experts in a variety of project types—from camps to cottages, new homes to historic renovations. Our work has won a number of awards over the years and has been extensively published in a variety of residential home design books and magazines.

Our like-minded team of three architects and two designers collectively offer decades of hands-on residential design and construction experience, as well as a common ethos: we believe a home should reflect its occupants, and its design should develop from an appreciation for and an understanding of its site. Using an efficient combination of hand-drawing and our office’s state-of-the-art software, we help our clients envision their home even before construction begins.

Thank you for your request. For the privacy of our homeowners, we typically do not share specific floor plans online. You can however get a general feel for the layout and how the home sits on its site, by looking at this image:

In kitchens, we like to avoid dark corners with no natural light wherever possible. This little window helps balance the light from the big sink window, plus from a functionality standpoint, when it is open, it allows the stove exhaust fan to quickly remove heavy cooking air and refresh the kitchen.

We've specified wood floors in bathrooms many times. The homeowners wanted the visual warmth they provide and we're okay with a little extra maintenance.

Agreed it's so nice to see non white cabinets featured. They're just not ideal for our growing family. We are building and have knotty alder cabinets going up that are custom stained. Our island is going to be made of white rock with a dark brown wood countertop and we are looking at a scrap place to find a light colored countertop for the rest of the kitchen. I believe our paint color will be accessible beige which seems to be more of a gray color. Love these ideas! Thanks!!

Thank you for your question. All of the doors are from Trustile Doors. They have an abundance of styles and options. The door knobs are from Emtek.

Currently we're finding that Maple flooring is less popular here in Maine. This is most likely due to the abundance of some alternatives like the native Red Birch flooring you see in this picture. That being said, a maple wood floor in similar size or wider planks could also be a good fit from an aesthetics standpoint.

Thank your for your question and kind comments. We typically prefer wood (red cedar or white cedar) siding. We think it offers the best combination of aesthetics and durability. To provide an extra level of performance and longevity, we always spec our siding as a "rainscreen", meaning it has a space behind it that allows for drying. The wood itself is also typically coated on all sides (even the non-visible sides) with the a coat of stain / paint before installation. After, installation we have the builder apply a second and possibly third coat of finish.

Thank you for the installation info, very helpful. If you have time, one other question occurred to me - how often do you recommend maintaining/repainting the siding for your northern clients? Thank you.

Thank you for your question. Camp Porta Panagia is a great little vacation home on Sebago Lake, here in Maine. The very site-specific design is a result of several factors, including some limitations to the footprint that were inherent to the property. All of Whitten Architects projects are site-specific, and we offer architectural design services rather than standardized home plans. Please take a look at the "Approach" page of our website for more information about how we work. http://www.whittenarchitects.com/approach
