This is an older landscape so my answer is going to be an educated guess. The wall portion and the columns adjacent to the steps, are both field stone varieties which in the upper Midwest means glacial till comprised mostly of granite. The columns are cut and the wall portion is natural field collected (with some cutting to allow for thinner profile.) "Fieldstone" is usually defined by your geographical area.

The edging in this particular case is steel, 3/16" thick by 4" high. When against a lawn edge, steel is less noticeable, a lot stronger (naturally), and resists movement more than vinyl throughout the seasons. If your taller drifts of plants require root or massing separation, then vinyl would work just as well.

I thought they were impatiens, but they are so prolific I questioned it. I live in Eastern Canada and my impatiens are never that large or as many blooms ,double or single variety. The danger of frost can be as late as the end of June, so I guess with such a short growing season they don't have the growing time or conditions to do so well here! Thanks so much for your quick response!

They were Impatiens, regular, taller variety, Super Elfin Red. However, downy mildew has hit the growers / nurseries pretty hard so impatiens are more difficult to find. We have substituted waxed begonia which has produced the same effect and even a bit more deer resistant.

Impatiens, Super Elfin. Downy mildew has been disastrous to the impatiens industry, we're substituting, with great success, waxed begonias or, when available, "Sun" impatiens.

The lawn, as any other plant, is treated the same with regular irrigation and trimming as needed. A lower setting on the lawn mower or careful trimming with a weed trimmer.
