I would love to give up both my front lawn and my back lawn. We spend way too much time and money trying to keep them looking nice. We have two small kids and I like having the play area in the back for them. For the time being, I just can't find an alternative that works. In the front yard we have a really weird problem where the part of the front yard on one side is in full Southern California inland super hot sun. The other side is in full shade due to large, mature Liquid Amber and Pine trees. I could easily go desert/native on one side, but those things would look out of place and probably wouldn't grow on the other side.

@cindygoodale - You might try "no-mow" grass. It's getting more common on commercial properties and a couple of my neighbors have put it in (Los Angeles). It's a long, wavy grass that only needs to be mowed once a year and uses less water than other turf grasses. I hope to put it in my front yard this fall, along with my other drought tolerant plants. Google "no mow grass" and "Prairie Nursery".

How to Choose the Right Solar Lights

Good point! Our first set of solar yard lights purchased about 8 years ago used CdS (photo) cells. The first thing to go bad was the thin coating applied over the solar cell and CdS cell. The CdS cell then corroded. I replaced these cells, installed new solar cells, and replaced the batteries (2 AA NiCads) to keep them going to this day. They have stainless steel housings and glass reflectors, but the rest is/was junk. The newer ones out today are so much better.

@szrick, thanks a lot for your comments. It's great knowing the background of why my new solar lamps from the same company no longer have the little photocells on top. I appreciate you opening up a little mystery. I love the way technology is always evolving the things we use every day.
