When Should You Hire a Staircase Professional?

Staircase companies work on new home construction and remodels. Designing and building staircases is a specialized skill; projects can range from simple and straightforward layouts to more elaborate custom staircases that involve hand-crafted millwork and metalwork. Whether you are looking for a contractor to replace wood balusters with iron ones or you need a complete stair installation, there are staircase professionals who can help you through the process, from start to finish.

Whether you choose a circular, L-shaped, straight or spiral stairway, most interior design professionals will tell you it’s best to match your home’s overall style. Also, timing is an important factor to staircase installation. In general, you’ll want to wait for drywall completion, as drywall and priming create moisture that can adversely affect installation. Drywall compounds can also permanently stain a beautiful oak staircase, so treat and protect your new wood stairs like you would your furniture. Your staircase contractor should be able to help you with the details, so make sure to ask about installation and maintenance details before hiring anyone.

Of course, safety is incredibly important. Make sure that stair and riser height, sturdy railings and stable landings are all part of your professional’s priorities. If you’re working on a larger remodel, you might want to have your contractor, builder or architect collaborate with your staircase designer or installer. Here are some related professionals and vendors to complement the work of staircases & railings: Architects & Building Designers, Interior Designers & Decorators, Carpenters, Design-Build Firms.

Here are the three most common stair types:

  • Post to post: The handrail runs between the newel posts.
  • Over the post: The railing anchors to the tops of the newel posts. This classic style offers a fluid look, adaptable to any shape of staircase.
  • Combination: The handrail runs from the main newel or post and then runs between the newels.
