Puffin House

This was a HUD house in need of a major renovation. Newly retired, my husband and I saw its potential and loved the location. We lived downstairs for a year to get the space liveable and are slowly completing the job now. We live on Puffin Drive.

This is the top to an antique dining hutch purchased at an estate sale. We added a board below with antique door knobs affixed. This is all the small entry needed - a temporary place for outdoor wear, some light and a homey greeting. The entry also has a coat closet for extra storage.

The "pony" wall was added to partially block the dining room from the entry while still allowing in light from that window. It also provided a space to add a console table. The height directed the height of the board and batten panel effect added to the dining room.

A small and cozy dining room. We added the paneling effect using MDF trim. The partial wall was added to separate from the entry and hall, but let window light in. Antique hutch provides china storage. The rest of the room is unadorned.

This is a small master bath, enlarged slightly from the original plan. The tub was replaced and relocated and tiled to the ceiling with subway tile. The shower curtain also stretches floor to ceiling. Color scheme of gray-blue, white, black and silver creates a relaxing and clean ambiance to a windowless room.

The vanity wall contains a linen closet and laundry hamper, and only one sink. We opted for counter space over double sinks, as we are not both using the sink at the same time. This makes the room feel larger than it is.

This peninsula fireplace divides the master bedroom into a sleeping and a sitting area, but allows for an open feeling. The low height mantle is lit by a small eyeball light and is seen from the hall/main living area when the door is open.

The hall leads past the dining room, entry, office and powder room to the master suite. It's narrow, three feet, so was widened to accommodate an entry table. The mirror adds width as well, but the rest of the walls are left clear of clutter.

The small scale entry was finished with a partial wall separating it from the dining room and providing space for a table. A coat hanger was fashioned from the top of an antique hutch and some old door knobs. A bordered sisal rug draws the visitor into the home.

I made the chalkboard from scrap and adding charcoal grout to black paint. It's organized and fun, making a welcoming entry from the garage.
