Professional Kitchen Addition

For two avid cooks, the kitchen they had been working in for the last 18 years was too small and too dark. What they dreamed of was a professional restaurant-style kitchen. The challenge was to incorporate industrial scale appliances while creating a family scale kitchen.

An addition to the house added the necessary space. Large windows and skylights were possible, as were wider openings from the kitchen into adjoining rooms. Tying in with the original 1930's mediterranean style, a covered porch now gave access to the vegetable gardens in the back yard.

The new layout separates cooking, prep and clean-up. Professional appliances line up against an interior wall, with an eight foot exhaust hood above. A deep sink and dishwasher near the range are available for washing pots and pans, while a second set across the room is used for everyday dishes and utensils. The refrigerator is across from the forty-five inch wide island, offering generous prep area. A small corner near the porch door has a place to set down the vegetables gathered in the garden. In another corner, a cabinet and counter dedicated to an espresso station, ice-maker and beverage center is just outside the main cooking areas, so guests can help themselves to glasses, drinks and ice without getting in the way of the cooks.

The old kitchen was redone as a butler's pantry. A pine cabinet salvaged from a grocery store shows off a collection of le-creuset cookware. Facing it is a wall of shelving for their collection of cookbooks. Access to the walk-in pantry is nearby. Some of the space was made over into a laundry closet.

The kitchen is a reflection of the homeowners love of entertaining - generous counter space to prep an abundance of gourmet dishes and wide aisles to allow guests to visit while the food is being prepared. The countertops are stainless steel, yet warmth comes through with wood cabinets, yellow walls, the accents of talavera tile and the colorful collections of pottery.
