Preston Retreat

by Conard Romano Architects
This island home is set on a dramatic site overlooking the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The owners wanted a substantial addition to a 150-square foot, one-room cabin. The new one-story home is carefully connected to the waterfront views, nestled low into the rocky site, and surrounded by large fir and pine trees. The home’s new main room was built adjacent to an ancient wind shaped pine, which becomes the focal point of the connection between indoors and outdoors. This main room features fir ceilings and a twenty-foot long bay window that enhances the engagement of the inside space to the view. A cupola above the center of the house brings light deep into the interior of the house.
