An Active Lifestyle
Confronting the failure of a year old patio and pool cladding, the cladding became 2x2 bluestone slabs with mist heads for cooling, the infinity edge became a glass tile seat and then below the ledge, an at-grade IPE wood deck was built with subsurface drainage.
A custom double fire pit and banquette seating area enhance the pool and sand volleyball court. Custom stainless steel planters were powder coated to match the chase lounge chairs. The volleyball court was excavated 12” deep and French drains were installed to keep the sand play area dry.
A collector’s garden features weathered edge outcropping stone slabs along the mulch path. 14’ tall River Birch creates a garden entry while specimen Louisa Crabapples are anchors. Weeping White Pine, Japanese Maples, dwarf Hemlocks, Scotch Pines, and Weeping Spruce are sprinkled throughout the...
Viewing from the collector’s garden, the great lawn is bordered by a sweep of perennials. Deer fencing on the bluff and iron fence beyond protects the property from an established local herd. An extensive underground irrigation and drainage system work in tandem to maintain the turf and plantings...
The meandering service drive, made of rustic antique pavers, is more of a garden path than drive. Mature Norway Spruce and Dense Yews along with sweeping bands of perennials and groundcovers thrive in the 10 – 12” deep imported soil mix. An elevated tennis court is accented by lush gardens.
At the front of the house, antique paver details and bluestone chip drive accent the home. A stately 22’ Scotch Pine focuses the view of a custom antiqued iron pergola, while the boxwood garden draws you forward. Antique pavers with a lawn inlay provide intrigue near the front door.
One experiences dramatic views of the ravine from the front door. Crowded with volunteer Maple saplings and heavily eroded, the ravine was selectively thinned and top-dressed prior to being seeded with a Highland Seed Mix to establish a woodland feel and to control erosion.
Left of the front door, mature plantings at the façade continue with the addition of a 10’ Winter-king Hawthorn. Given that underground snow melt and main utility lines feed through this zone, perforated galvanized steel plates to permit root growth were added for long-term protection of these...
Looking right of the front door, the client’s wish was satisfied with the fabrication of a custom pergola. Full scale sketches and iron samples were reviewed and accepted. The old world charm of hand hammered and twisted steel attracts visitors to this exquisitely antiqued pergola.
Excavation for the installation of a putting green and yoga area unearthed a remnant of an old spa. Rather than remove it the layout was reconfigured allowing the remnant to serve as a unique seating nook and story piece. A garden with a client defined color pallet embraces the space.
After an active day the owners often retreat to the bluestone lookout. Custom hyper-tufta planters with succulents and loose boxwood frame the space. The lookout provides casual seating overlooking the bluff and lake where the warmth of the sun and sounds of the lapping water sooth and relax.
