Modern Cambridge Extension 001

Chadwick Dryer Clarke were approached to offer ideas for an uplifting extension and renovation to a drab and dreary existing kitchen- diner and utility area, whilst not significantly increasing the floor area. Our solution was to look at opportunities to increase the volume of the spaces with a series of stepped heights, key areas highlighted with large rooflights looking to capture the sun where possible. The main feature of space was an electrically operated fully opening skylight allowing the outside to be brought inside. In a very densely populated area with space a premium this approach has brought light and importantly sunshine into the west facing property and enables views of the sky beyond the neighbouring terraced properties to create a view out above the enclosed garden space. Oversized sliding doors assist this greater view focussing on the sky rather than the adjacent terraces and open out onto a flush seating area. Internally the furniture and kitchen has been beautifully crafted to the users needs. A clever but very functional
rotating island unit offers the user flexibility within the kitchen and a beautiful olive wood built in bench enables incorporates storage as well as seating to the remainder of the room.
