By removing the wall between the living room and family room, replacing the fireplace with a gas model and raising the ceiling for greater spaciousness, we turned two small, narrow and difficult to use rooms into one large and open space where friends and family can come together to enjoy each others company. The kitchen includes a double oven and built-in refrigerator. A garden window over the sink provides a place for herb growing through out the year. Cherry cabinetry, granite counters and subway tile finish the space. Visit http://tinyurl.com/3ndcgha to see more photos of this project including before shots. Photography by Mike Kaskel

The cooktop is placed between the Great Room and kitchen areas so the cook can be a part of the family activities. With amble counter space on each side and plenty of storage below, the cooking station is all self contained and efficient. The exhaust hood is kept higher to increase the sense of spaciousness and connection of the entire home. Visit

This home office / library space was originally the dining room. As part of the remodel, all dining activities take place in the Great Room, freeing up this space for other uses. The doorway to the kitchen area was closed in and built-in bookcases installed to make this a quiet place to read a book or the newspaper or to balance a checkbook.
