Silk Road Weaves

Applying an understanding of our human response to color is at the core of Massachusetts color consultant and artist/designer Barbara Jacobs’ design philosophy.

Since 1986, Barbara has helped to create supportive, comfortable environments for home or work through her ongoing practice as an architectural color consultant.

In 2006, Barbara had the opportunity to bring to life her long-held dream of creating fine rugs of her own design that you see here, in Koo de Monde.

Growing up amidst the paintings and sculpture of her father, William Saltzman of Minneapolis, Barbara has lived in color-centered environments for her entire life.

Her formal education includes work done at the Academia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy; the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied with Adja Yunkers and David Hockney; and the University of Minnesota, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in studio art with a concentration in painting and printmaking.

In 2000 she earned accreditation by the IACC (International Association of Color Consultants/Designers), where she is currently a member.

In addition to private commission work, Barbara’s artistic involvement includes participating in exhibitions whenever possible. From 1986 to 1990 she was awarded grants from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts to teach design seminars on the traditional design methods and decorative arts techniques of many cultures.

Barbara’s programs on color have been enjoyed by a variety of audiences in Boston-area educational locations as well as nationally at NeoCon, in Atlanta and Chicago.

Professional affiliations also have included ASID (American Society of Interior Designers / Industry Partner) and CMG (Color Marketing Group).

Through her work as a rug designer for her Silk Road Weaves collections of handmade Tibetan rugs, Barbara is a member of GoodWeave, the pioneer independent organization for ending child labor in the rug industry.

She works only with the most highly experienced adult weavers in Nepal. Barbara’s original designs for Silk Road Weaves are hand-knotted of the finest Himalayan wool, Chinese silk, and a variety of indigenous plant fibers for additional color and textural variations.

Barbara's partnership with GOODWEAVE is your guarantee that no child labor will ever be a part of the creative process of rugs from Silk Road Weaves.

This affiliation matches her personal values concerning artistry, integrity, and the highest quality of socially conscious production.

Barbara’s unique perspective as an artist, her vision as a colorist, and her interest in incorporating a variety of materials and textures result in rug designs that explore an eclectic range of color and emotional appeal.

Her designs range from the “painterly” to more structured, sometimes including historic or inter-cultural design references or whimsical motifs.

While Barbara’s artistic expression has a distinctive contemporary and abstract direction, her rugs beautifully complement many styles of décor including both antique and contemporary furnishings.

Barbara is able to offer a full range of customization options and highly personalized customer service for individuals, designers, or corporations.
