House Extension, Terenure, Dublin 6W

This project comprises the remodelling and extension of a 1950’s-built semi-detached house in the Dublin suburb of Terenure. The existing house had been altered over the years to provide an accessible bathroom at ground floor and the kitchen was relocated into the converted garage.

The clients wished to re-instate the garage as a store for bicycles and other equipment; open up the plan at ground floor with a new kitchen and extend into a living space that connects better with the garden.

The garden is east facing so the new extension was organised to maximise southern sunlight with a glazed corner window towards the garden. When the sun is at it's highest in mid-summer the living area is shaded by an overhanging roof and the sun washes down the back wall of the room through a south facing rooflight.

The inside and outside are linked with a large sliding opening on to a raised terrace. The terrace itself is framed with raised planter boxes and the new building and landscaping are tied together by the use of the same brick for facing walls and for paving.
