Zig Zag House

The house is located deep in the rolling pastures of Meath. Our brief was to adapt and extend a small dark rural cottage into a bright new contemporary home whilst retaining the original’s character.

After a detailed analysis of the site our approach was to design a series of small zigzag intimate interconnecting buildings aligned at right angles and orientated to maximize sun and views.

The cottage’s original character was revealed with its cosy sitting room. The glazed entrance sunroom links the subdued-lit cottage with the new bright busy kitchen/family room. Partly glazed on all four sides, it invites sunlight at high and low level through out the day and seasons. The sleeping area faces east with high level glazing drawing light into the bedrooms.

Outside the building encloses separate external areas; a sun deck, a series of small herb and vegetable gardens and a children’s play garden with cars out of sight.

'We’re delighted with the design - more than met our wishes. John brought a really innovative but also practical eye to the design concepts. We have a home we love and which works really well for us' (client comment).
