NYC Downtown Studio

A unique 650 sqft NYC studio apartment is converted to two bedrooms with linen curtains as the partitions. This apartment is all about textures that create an elegant, calm, rustic traditional feel. It's clean, minimal and organized, and easy to keep the look together without ever feeling cramped.

Many of the furnishings are from Restoration Hardware, and the decor is based on the Axel Vervoordt perspective of rustic antique and modern being in harmony in a minimalist setting. I call it "Rustic Belgian Modern".

Sustainability in this apartment comes from embracing a reduced footprint and not taking up more space than is needed, even for a family of 3. Some of the pieces were reused by giving them a new lease in life, for instance the sofa was mid-century modern in design but new sofa legs helped it blend with a more traditional decor. Finally, some of the pieces are made of recycled materials, such as the dining table which is made of recycled wood planks.

Achieving this space takes strategic planning and a clear design vision.

Completed 3/2013.
Approximate Budget: $25,000 (furnishings + design service).
