Historic East Bay Mansion

A couple with small children had their eye on the desirable Diablo Country Club area for a while. When the most prominent home came on the market they wasted no time to make an offer, as large homes are rare in this small town, and the house’s history is incomparable. Built upon an 1879 stock farm owned by the Big Four of the Central Pacific Railroad, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, Charles Crocker and Collis Huntington it later became the clubhouse of the Diablo Country Club.

While Claudia and her team wanted to pay homage to the home's grand history we also aimed to create a design fit for a modern family who appreciate tradition. We layered the design with color and interesting pieces from around the world. We not only custom-designed many furnishings and mixed them with antiques, we also traveled to India to commission several rugs, tables, lamps and decorative objects. And for the husband’s collection of wine and to entertain his friends we carved a man’s gathering place out of the home’s basement that combines the ambiance of a speak easy with the rustic charm of a late 19th century cellar. Whether upstairs or downstairs, this is a cosmopolitan home that seamlessly blends European traditions with exotic elements from the Middle East, India and China, designed for living casually and luxuriously at the same time.
