Albany Basement Recreation Room & Home office

This basement remodel required that the subfloor and foundation be lowered for a code complying height. Some of the tricks were how to blend the existing staircase into this new lowered section without rebuilding an entire new stair way. The solution was a landing that carried across to allow for access into the office area, which stayed at its existing height, with a few treads down to be considered a separate section of the stairs. Storage in older homes is essential, so keeping access to the under-stair area was key. This basement is used for arts and crafts, sewing, home theater and gaming. The home office has a desk for both the parents and their child for paying bills, email etc and homework etc. The office was actually built-inward to be a bit smaller because the existing foundation which was remaining had a large trapezoid footing which prevented furnishings to be placed closer to the wall. We took advantage of this and created useful niches with shelves so that the storage solutions didn't take over even more of the room in this small space.
