Remodel
The project involved architectural design services for the addition to, and remodeling of, a three bedroom/two bath one-story mid-century modern home. The owners have two small children.

The size and configuration of the spaces, the shape of the kitchen, uninviting entry and limited storage space did not well suit the immediate needs of the family and it was determined that the issues would become exacerbated over time. An additional constraint included the requirement that the existing bedrooms were not to be touched which meant all remodeling and expansion needed to be accomplished toward the front and more “public” areas of the house. A benefit to this was the opportunity to dramatically change the appearance of the house without too great an investment.

The project goals and design objectives included:

• Increasing square footage as much as possible within the budget
• Creating a 4th bedroom/guestroom/ office
• Redesign of the kitchen to create a beautiful and practical space as both parents cook and enjoy entertaining and, consequently, need good storage and space to work. The addition of a breakfast bar makes it easier to entertain.
• Improving the relationship between the living and dining/entertainment areas
• Improving lighting throughout the house
• Creating space for the owners to work without forcing them to use the dining table and kitchen counters.
• Improve flow between the interior and exterior of the house and make it easier to cook outdoors (grill/BBQ) year-round
• Improve views to the outdoors and yet retain privacy from the street.
• Recycling and re-use of materials – doors, trim, flooring – to the extent possible
• Creating a Laundry/cat room
• Specifying and ensuring construction materials and finishes met sustainability requirements to achieve Certification by Build it Green.
• Continue the clean and simple modern aesthetic both indoors and outdoors.
