Before/After Kitchen

The design challenges for this West Memorial kitchen was to incorporate a functional island, determine whether to keep the washer and dryer built into the kitchen, maximize storage by customizing the cabinetry with accessories and ultimately update the entire look of the space.

The existing island, while it seemed large and spacious, did not have functional storage or adequate work space for the client’s culinary activities. Also, it did not allow enough room to cook and bake with their grandchildren. The re-location of the washer and dryer to another area of the home, allowed us to enlarge the island and gain more storage space. It even gave them some seating at the island. The cabinetry was designed specifically around the clients storage needs such as a custom pantry and appliance garage that concealed small kitchen appliances when not in use.

With minimal natural sunlight in the kitchen, the addition of lighted cabinets with antique glass inserts and distressed Vintage White cabinetry allowed the kitchen to remain bright and airy. The fluorescent light box was removed and the ceiling was raised to enlarge the feel of the kitchen. The clients enjoy their modern appliances, such as the Viking Steam Oven that has the ability to cook several different meals at one time, without the transfer of flavors.

This Old World style kitchen is complimented with bungalow style touches, such as the custom backsplash insert by Modern Bungalow in Denver. The cast stone hood by Old World Stoneworks in Dallas gives the appearance of natural limestone, but at a fraction of the cost.

The kitchen is now a bright and spacious work space that allows for multiple cooks, family gatherings and a lifetime of future memories.
