7th Street Residence

This 3,800 square foot single family home is a consolidation of what were formerly two separate three-story apartments. The new structure occupies the footprint and volumetric envelope of the former duplex, but in a vastly updated version.

The artist client’s first request was for a large studio in which to paint, so two rooms were merged at the ground floor to make a studio that opens to a walk street courtyard.

The couple’s second request was for display spaces for their large collection of art acquired during their many diverse travels. A second-level family room doubles as a treasure chest of sculpture, paintings and books.

Their third request was for generous art walls for displaying both their paintings and others they have collected. Circulation spaces and hallways were widened to make them into gallery spaces.

The property’s ocean views dictated large openings and open spaces, but controlling the light on the artwork was also paramount. Motorized roller shades and UV-protected glass line the public spaces.

The material palette—both inside and out—reflects the client’s enthusiasm for texture and color. Mahogany ceilings hover over rift white oak cabinets and bamboo floors. Fireplaces and counters are of silver travertine, and on the front façade a large Corten steel panel hangs over the limestone entryway.
