An Evening Retreat

The comprehensive landscape lighting by Night Light provides a richer and more thorough treatment than the architectural lighting could achieve for this elegant residence in Burr Ridge, IL.

Working as a team with the landscape designer, contractor and client, we designed the lighting to enhance multiple elements on the property including stone walkways, patios, swimming pool and pool deck, pergola, trees and plantings.

Viewed from the street, the symmetry of the home's front facade required careful positioning of the fixtures in order to achieve uniform lighting from side to side. The decorative pendant and wall-mount fixtures were dimmed to balance their brightness with the landscape lighting.

Both the center walkway and the two side-walks are illuminated with decorative path lights - spaced properly to produce a gradation of brightness in between. Small trees at each end have uplights to emphasize their branching structure.

A playful bronze fountain/sculpture near the front entry is lit with a small uplight that has a narrow beam-spread in order to focus all the light directly on the figures, while reducing light-spill around or over the sculpture. The directional lighting on the sculpture enhances a sense of movement.

At the rear of the house, key architectural elements are illuminated using a variety of fixtures and bulb types. Note that the architectural elements are illuminated with warm-toned lighting, while plants and trees are illuminated with cool-toned or neutral light. A warm glow on the house and pergola are psychologically inviting while the cool light on the plant material intensifies their green coloration for a healthy appearance. The contrast between warm and cool light provides another layer of interest to this lighting scheme.

The rear yard swimming environment features a zero edge swimming pool, built-in all-season spa, large pergola and a stone fireplace. Accent lighting highlights the forms and textures of each element emphasizing the beautiful materials and high quality craftsmanship.

Shade trees and evergreen trees on the perimeter of the property are illuminated with ground-mounted fixtures for year- round interest.

As advised, the client and landscape designer consulted with us early on during the landscape design process while the home was still under construction. This made it possible to have the interior electrician (already on the job) provide the necessary power locations and controls.
