Beach House I

This ocean facing residence in Bethany Beach, Delaware belongs to a family who loves to relax and get away from the hectic life of the city. Completed in 2005, the concept of this home was to mix elegant and modern styles while reflecting a novel interpretation of a typical east coastal property. Some eye-catching elements of this home are its custom driftwood fireplace, treated teak ceilings, unusual back lite agate stone countertops, and exotic woods.
The kitchen has a custom copper range hood, granite countertops, and a mix of two toned blue stained cabinetry. Every window has been equipped with woven fiber sunshades. One of the more interesting features upon entering is the ironwork on the staircase that mimics undulating seaweed. This design was complemented by the “waves” of zebrawood mixed with wenge hardwood flooring that extends four floors. The custom iron chandeliers hanging above the staircase create a soft glow while faintly outlining the details of the iron balustrades. The wave like pattern repeats in the second story balcony that overlooks the great room. Great contrast was taken into account when placing curved lines next to straight lines.
The majority of the furniture was designed to complement one another and not detract from the ocean views. By using simple understated fabrics and accessories, an ease of elegance was evoked throughout the coastal residence. The living room features a tailor made sectional sofa that is accentuated with a woven rug made of leather, jute, and raffia. A matchless clam shell sink can also be found in the downstairs powder room, framed with walls of woven grass cloth with limestone for the flooring. All this great interior detail was placed to ensure each room complemented its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
The exterior is complete with ipe decking and marine grade finishes withstanding the harsh salt air. Passing by on a long walk down the beach, one might notice the captain’s wheel perched on the fourth floor balcony.
