Portland, Oregon Rebuild; Keates Residence

Remodeling a home has always been one of the ultimate choices in sustainability. By re-using much of the existing home we are not using new raw materials, nor are we stripping the earth of another undeveloped piece of property or are we are increasing the amount of impermeable roof area.

Often a homeowner is faced with tough choices when they are considering a remodel to their home. The cost of an extensive remodel can equal or exceed the cost of buying or building a new home. In the case of this home, the decision was made to build a new home on the same site. The existing home was dismantled piece by piece by the Rebuilding Center of Portland, Oregon, and the homeowners received a tax credit. Some components of the existing home were re-used in the client’s new home construction – such as cabinets, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures and hardwood flooring. The remainder would become usable by other homeowners for their remodel projects. What could not be re-used or re-sold would be recycled.
