Used as a summer retreat in Sonoma County, this family cottage acts a secluded sanctuary that blends earthy materials with modern architecture. Gathering spaces are defined in the large main area under the zinc roof, while bedroom privacy is sheltered by dense stone enclosures. Indoors unites with outdoors on the open courtyard where the steel-clad fireplace provides additional screening for the master bedroom. The court is paved with rough local field stones spaced to intermingle with native grasses, and gradually fade out into the meadow at the edges.
