Cottage Charmer

The homeowners have lived in this house for over 25 years and love the location and the style of the house, but they have never liked the location of the kitchen. Being in the middle of the house, the kitchen felt dim and cramped, and interrupted the traffic flow from room to room. We traded spaces with an adjacent breakfast area on the front of the house -- moving the kitchen there because the space was much larger and being on an exterior wall had the benefit of a window and a large skylight. We put the breakfast area in place of the old kitchen, and converted the old pass-through into a large cased opening. The combined effect of a larger kitchen and an open wall made the whole house feel more open, making their house of twenty years truly their own.

Since the house was built on a slab, we had to excavate to tie the new plumbing into the old. We used an infrared camera to locate the existing plumbing lines in the floor. We replaced the window on the outside wall with a shorter window to fit over the new countertop.

The kitchen features solid maple cabinetry with many storage accessories – the main cabinets are white to reflect the light with a distressed black island as a focal point. The kitchen also features granite countertops, a custom tile backsplash with a decorative pattern over the stove, and laminate wood flooring. The layout was designed to give the husband a gracious workspace to cook, and the island was a place where his wife could sit and be with him as he works. They recently had their whole family in the house, and the husband remarked, “Isn’t this nice – we are all in here cooking together and we aren’t bumping into one another.”

The job really got off on the right foot when during the demolition, the lead carpenter found the wife’s 25th anniversary wedding band that she had lost five years previously – evidently it had rolled off the counter and behind the old stove.
