This residence’s outdoor spaces were disjointed breaking up the useable spaces with either a up or down step. A challenging planting area was created by an overhanging window and a poorly sited tree crowed the most important courtyard space outside the kitchen and home office. The design intent was to unify the outdoor entertaining spaces while making each space an individual private area.
In the courtyard space off the kitchen, a tall vertical water feature becomes the main focal point seen from the views inside the house. The fountain is constructed with a corrugated concrete column that falls into a triangular basin which doubles as a raised drinking basin for the client’s dogs. The ground plain is an Ipe wood deck that has a herring bone pattern which carries the eye around the spaces and invites one to enter the next outdoor room. In the next outdoor room, a large pergola is incorporated as the outdoor kitchen which embraces the Kamado Barbecue. Interweaving fingers of a pre-cast concrete sidebar grasp the pergola post while below a set of custom made storage cabinets on casters become serving side tables. The backyard room incorporates a built in spa dropped bellow the deck level surrounded and disguised by a raised bench. Adjacent to this room lies an outdoor fire pit constructed with a concrete basin filled with recycled glass. Each of these rooms is set on a 45 degree angle and surrounded by layers of plants creating a stunning backdrop that keeps the eye away from the close property line.
