2012 Total Home Transformation

When deciding to build an addition, the couple’s artistic and DIY personalities meant they wanted control over certain areas of the project, designing and installing tile in the baths and around the fireplace, making their own fixture selections, choosing colors (and painting the door and stair bright colors). They also designed and installed their IKEA kitchen cabinets and purchased the appliances. The rest, they brought to us with a request to create a larger home that fit their funky personalities and busy and social lifestyle. Reqirements: a master suite with second bathroom. Their love of mid-century modern and growing collection of pieces lent itself to a uniquely modern design.

This project transformed a 900-square-foot existing cottage into a modern masterpiece with 2250-square-foot of heated and cooled space and a 480-square-foot garage. The first-story living room and dining area got a facelift with vaulted ceiling, the kitchen was 100% contemporary and above it, the new family room graces the second story supported by trusses. The original brick chimney still stands in what was once the attic and rooftop and now extends higher above the new standing seam metal roof. A new garage was built behind the home and above it, the master suite. This separate structure was connected to the existing footprint via a glass-doored walkway and stairwell featuring a custom curved concrete, steel and wood staircase that leads to the second floor with the family room and guest room to one side, master bed and bath on the other, and a small but pretty covered porch ahead.
