Why were angles and soffits (bulkheads) so in during the late 80’s and 90’s, and even up to today they are a prevalent “feature” of design in many homes. designs by human. currently had the opportunity pull out some unique ideas on this mid-90’s style home located in a well developed community. The issue came up when the homeowner needed a space for the kids and friends to play games, bang on the drums and watch movies while adults can watch a movie, entertain and not be disturbed but still keep a watchful eye.
After a list of previous design companies and contractors came in all giving the same remedy, which was to add a bathroom and bonus room space above the garage at a huge expense drawings were underway. designs by human. came in and mentioned for a little less cost they could reconfigure the existing layout and essentially get a brand new house in a new and updated modern feel.
We started by pushing the kitchen back roughly fifteen feet into what was the formal dining room, never used for dining always used for storage and my favorite, Lego’s. The front room was then walled off creating a media room at first and shortly after framing it was dubbed the “man cave” by the client and her husband, so much for the kids gaming. By walling this portion in the front of the home off it created a wonderful opportunity to create a feature wall that would stand as its own work of art, we used a splitface marble tile that wrapped into the new kitchen and butted into the quartz countertops that surrounded the “man cave” door as a large focal point and piece of trim.
The ceilings throughout were originally at various heights, ranging from nine feet to sixteen feet which created a nice shadow show about mid day, more of a shadow nightmare. The ceilings were dropped to a consistent ten feet, ironically it created more space with less and a more even flow of light throughout. The kitchen was turned into a modern and functional workspace and with its new placement allowed proper furniture arrangement in the new living and dining areas. Enjoy!
