Contemporary Colorful Kitchen
by Ventana Construction LLC
A mid-century rambler in Seattle was in need of a major kitchen remodel. By removing a wall between the dining room and kitchen, and installing colorful Kerf cabinets, both rooms bloom with color, and benefit from functional, modern materials. The countertop is Paperstone and new Pella windows bring lots of light in.
Kitchen
The new view from the hall is clean and bright, with warm cork flooring in the kitchen area.
Contemporary Railing
A new black steel railing with stainless stringers is topped with a mahogany cap to match the trim in the rest of the mid-century modern.
Contemporary Railing
Mahogany here and there. Handrail brackets match the steel railing styling, and reflects the mahogany trim from the '50s in the rest of the house.
Kitchen
Tear down that wall! Where the peninsula cabinets are there used to be a solid wall separating the kitchen and dining areas. The new configuration is open, and colorful.
Kitchen
A huge new window brings in the light where there were awkward spaces before. The brick on the exterior had to be reset to make room for the new openings.
Chalkboard wall
A chalkboard wall is a place for a little artistic expression and the addition of a metal strip down the side allows a place for magnets and notes, which the stainless steel SubZero doesn't.
Kitchen
The combination of colorful cabinets, bright wall color and stainless steel draws you in. The tile is a back-painted glass tile, which provides a little texture for a material that would otherwise be a little flat.
Kitchen
The view from kitchen back to dining room and through to living room makes the home feel expansive thanks to the removal of a wall. The open upper cabinets provide display space.
Cork flooring meets wood
A conundrum about how to transition from wood to cork floor is solved by adding a metal plate to the bottom of the railing. Problem solved!
Mahogany door-- contemporary
A new entry door is mahogany with horizontal panels in reeded glass. It effectively provides privacy while letting light into what used to be a dark entry hall.
Contemporary cabinets
Added to 5 ideabooks
Because of the way the Kerf drawers are built, there's no need for pulls or knobs.
Contemporary cabinets
Kerf cabinets http://kerfdesign.com/ are unusual in construction and beautiful as well.
