Lutyens Inspired English Country House

The countryside around Lewisburg, PA possesses the lush rolling landscape of the south of England with its mix of gentle hills and valleys, woods and meadows. The underlying impulse for this home grew from the owner’s experience of that iconic British landscape by studying the great country houses of Sir Edwin Lutyens. His work is known for the deft use of space to create a dramatic sequence of experiences and to magnify the apparent scale of the home to create a feeling of grandeur in an eminently livable home. We were asked to create a modern family home with the vitality, formality and yet playfulness characteristic of Lutyens.

Situated within a 400 acre family farm, the design meets the opportunity for a bold presentation as one approaches the property followed by an intimate courtyard experience. The entry court is the first room of the house, carved into the hillside, which leads to the front door. It is animated by the various layers of space, framed views and a variety of paths to gardens and other functions. Despite the apparent scale of the house, arrival in the front hall reveals the narrowest aspect of the house opening to a panoramic view of the property and surrounding hills. By overlaying a relatively narrow plan with a great sheltering clay tile roof to engage porches and terraces, the outdoors is made accessible from many rooms. Daylight comes from unexpected directions, volumes are layered from narrow to deep, tall to low, cool and warm. Similarly, the three level elliptical stair, long enfilade interior views and the multi level library orient one to spaces beyond and a sense of inhabiting more of the house at any moment in time.
