NYC Backyard: Gravel Patio, Outdoor Seating, Globe Lights, Sofa, Bamboo, Shade

This inexpensive backyard transformation shows how quick and easy it can be to make a small space feel cozy and inviting. We removed the blue tarp, put down some weed barrier fabric to keep weeds out, and put enough cream-colored pea gravel on top to completely cover the fabric, while still leaving the beauty of a sinuous tree root partially exposed. Wood planters filled with shade-tolerant bamboo soften the look of the fence, and overhead globe string lights brighten up the space at night. This backyard is located on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
