50's Paraboloid Roof Residence

Renovation design and decor of a 1952 modernist home on the Sawkill Creek in Woodstock. This home was originally built in 1952 by an architect for the abstract expressionist painter Sal Sirugo. After selling the home, the next owners renovated the home and stripped back much of the 1950's character and flair. Though the home did have terrazzo flooring, due to the renovations in the late 1980's the tile had been damaged and no longer ran throughout. The kitchen was closed off as a separate room to the home and carpeting had been placed in recesses and corners.
Dichotomy Interiors designed a new layout and floor plan opening up the kitchen to the rest of the main level and shifting the dining room to the far end of the great room creating a den space for watching television. Stained walnut was added throughout the space and bamboo flooring in warm rich tones warmed the space up. Sliding walnut storage was added on the living room side of the kitchen cabinets and a walnut feature wall was created for showcasing art. The kitchen was kept streamlined and minimal to highlight the architecture of the home and the views out the windows while the color contrasts with the rich walnut wood. A bright pop of soothing turquoise runs through the back of the home echoing the water outside and paying homage to the era of the home. In the den a versatile convertible sofa that becomes two swivel chairs to face the other direction or a sleeper sofa and also a chaise lounge was used. Whimsical accessories add 50's flair and pops of yellow brighten up the recessed walnut wall that was customized for the television. In the dining room a streamlined glass dining table allows maximum viewing of the fireplace while an eames lounge chair rests nearby for reading. The great room houses a long sectional to enjoy the expansive view and also for watching movies on the pull down movie screen. The projector was built into the existing wall above the original support beam running above the kitchen along with speakers. Lastly to showcase the fireplace and the spiral staircase, the metal railing was covered with walnut and capped with aluminum railings. With less visual clutter you pay more attention to the staircase and the fireplace, and also you get the added benefit of privacy and heat control.
