This home is located on a bayou with limited – but still enviable – views of Sarasota Bay and Longboat Key along with three beautiful oak trees on the street side of the lot. A non site-specific design approach would likely situate the house in a manner that would have the views blocked.

In this custom site-specific design, the views take precedence over other planning factors. The house is sited to fully maximize the views of the waterfront and as well as the views of the trees. Because of the spectacular views of the waterfront from the kitchen and living room, that space has been termed as the “essential room” as it is the essential to the house. The master and guest bedrooms also share this view. To enhance the staircase the views of the oak trees are provided as one ascends through the use of three stepped windows. Furthermore, a unique triangle staircase design was developed to provide a meaningful arrival at each landing, thus becoming a major design element of the interior space. The inside/outside connection is reinforced through a wall of glass in the essential room and a waterfront terrace accessible from the essential room and master bedroom.

The project started as a property feasibility study for repeat clients, This custom project is allowing the owners and architect the ability to coordinate many details that will provide a clean, calm modern home with warm elements such as wood floors. The property has a strong sense of place and the site-specific architecture is reinforcing that sense of place which originally drew the owners to purchase the property.
