Lower Cost Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation Project

PROBLEM:
Build and Design team wanted to come up with an insulation option for the attic that would allow the homeowner to:
1. Insulate the slopes to ensure there are no ice dams.
2. Seal all the air leaks and enjoy the benefits of closed cell spray foam insulation
3. Bring the benefits of spray foam insulation for lower than the average cost of a spray foam insulation install.

SOLUTION:
We designed a hybrid insulation option for the attic slopes:
1. install 2 inches of closed cell spray foam insulation on the slopes first - to seal off all air leak spots and create solid vapor barrier.
2. install unfaced fiberglass batt insulation to hit R-values and get the benefits of fiberglass insulation and negate all the cons of fiberglass insulation, such as low moisture threshold, poor air sealer.

OUTCOME:
Homeowner and contractor could enjoy the benefits of closed cell spray foam insulation and still bring the project in, under budget and on time.
