Santa Rita Residence
by Verdance Fine Garden Design
This compact corner lot was transformed from a decrepit brick patio and failing lawn to a lush, intimate space for dining and relaxation. With a soothing color palette of only green and white, the plantings offer an incredible variety of textures and seasonal blooms. The paving complements the plantings with warm hues that coordinate with the remaining brick walkway. Laying out the spaces on the diagonal improves views from indoors and out, and creates the illusion of added space in the yard.
Front Fountain Urn
Nestled among lush plantings near the home's entry, this recirculating fountain provides an architectural accent and masks the sound of passing traffic.
Front Gate and Gravel Path
An informal pathway of 'Salmon Bay' gravel connects peripheral spaces with the main brick walkway. Path lighting increases safety, while accent lights illuminate specimen trees and fountains.
Front walk & gravel path
The plantings fulfilled the homeowner's request for a calm, green-and-white palette. Even without a wide variety of flower colors, the textures and forms of the plants provide contrast and wonderful variations throughout every season.
Custom Fountain
A fountain was custom-designed to provide a perfectly scaled focal point and pleasing sound at the dining patio. "Matchsticks" of slate were mortared over a concrete core, with a recirculating pump hidden in the basin beneath.
Dining Patio with Custom Fountain and Seatwall
To stand out among the green landscape, the dining patio was designed in warm-hued stone, along with brick trim to complement the home's remaining brick accents.

Dining Patio with Grill
Beneath the canopy of a massive Atlas Cedar, the dining patio is separated from the cooking station to prevent smoke and odors from bothering guests.
Dining Patio with Seatwall and Fountain
The dining patio was set on the diagonal of the corner lot to be viewable from many points throughout the yard and the house, as well as to create the illusion of a larger space. A stone-clad seatwall backed by a row of Birch trees buffers the patio from the property fence and privacy hedge.
