Central Park West, New York City
This home-in-the-sky is the cosmopolitan antidote for a family who makes Northern California their permanent residence. In addition to seeking a warm and elegant retreat, a primary goal was to enhance the apartment’s scale. Though panoramic views of Central Park help, a decisive approach was necessary. Classical molding and visually textural wall finishes were added, floors were darkened, and window treatments were designed to increase each room’s apparent height. Multiple seating areas keep the Living Room dynamic, while wrap-around cabinetry in the Study is cozy with and old-world flair. The Master Bedroom is warmly serene and has an experiential separateness from other areas. Attempting to create a sense of “approachable” grandeur, elements evocative of an aesthetic from early 20th century European salons were paired with graphic colors and forms: A Living Room rug of over-sized poppies graces a gold-fringed black mohair sofa; a Berber rug in the Study compliments blue grass-clothe wall covering; a lambskin throw is juxtaposed a fringed Fortuny headboard in the Master Bedroom. This is a home where fantasy marries non-fiction, where visual drama visits home-style comfort. It is a design that reflects both the owners’ spirit and the glamour of the Big City.
