Sails, Metal Sculpture, Everett, WA.

Design Team: Dan Nelson, Principal designer
Karla Matzke, Artist

In 2004 Dan teamed up with artist and gallery owner, Karla Matzke to design and have fabricated a metal sculpture that was placed in a public walkway in downtown Everett, Washington.

The concept for Sails was to abstract ship sails out of stainless steel. The sculpture reflects Everett's maritime history.

Light reflecting off the burnished stainless steel also brings natural day lighting into a potentially dimly lit space.

The public walkway, designed by Designs Northwest Architects won a
Merit Award for Design Excellence from the Northwest Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2004 and was recently featured in the book 1000 ECO TIPS by 100 ECO ARCHITECTS, Guidelines on Sustainable Architecture from the Worlds Leading Eco-Architecture Firms.
