More than cookies in the oven...
This formal home in the Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco had a dreary, small and dated kitchen in the rear of the house. The exterior of the home at the back didn't match the style of the home facing the street. The front presented a formal light tan stucco facade with black glossy trim - the face to the Vallejo Street. The other was completely mismatched with aged brown shingles and white trim!. At some time in the past a very small room at the rear of the house had been added and converted into a modest but hardly usable space.

The architect's challenge included the creation of a spacious kitchen and adjoining family/entertainment room. The project included a layout convenient to the existing dining room and the provision for a place for a less formal breakfast area. Belena has a degree from the culinary academy and desired a state of the art kitchen with lots of room for storage. Storage for linens, sterling silver that could be locked, cookbooks easy to access, hidden recycling, a handy place for the telephone, a beverage refrigerator, a small walk-in pantry, and a powder room would be nice too! And, oh, by the way...we are expecting a son soon! So, lets get started!

The design team worked closely with the owners to create a marvelous kitchen and sitting room open to a new deck area for outdoor entertaining and views of the garden beyond. The large island creates a command center for Belena where you will always find a fresh batch of just baked chocolate chip cookies! And now with son Charley underfoot Mom has a daughter on the way!

Many other improvements were made to the home on the lower level as well. Slate was added to the entry steps along with new handrails, a secure doorway from the garage to the entry, a new small roof over the entry to protect visitors from the rain. The entire lower level was gutted to create a beautiful new full bathroom, laundry room and storage closets and exercise room. Not to forget any family member - finally, a special room was created just for their golden Labrador "Bear". Bear has a place to get out of the rain, to be bathed and to have a warm cushy bed.
