old crate stairway design
by Funky Junk InteriorsFunky Junk Interiors
Desiring something more unique than carpeted stairs, an old crate stairway was created out of craft paint, some stencils and a little creativity. The paint went directly on the original wood, creating a very believable effect that the stairs were really derived from chunks of old crates. The reaction from visitors is always most entertaining. :)

Simple rustic steel rods were used for the handrail. They were simply cut down to size with a chop saw, left in their natural part rusty state. They proved to be the perfect compliment to the entire look.

For the longest time, the cats wound their way 'around' the logos when using the stairs. They thought something was in their way. :)

Stencils were made out of my signmaking decal equipment to recreate the look of old crates.

Unique embellishments were added here and there to enhance the eclectic salvaged feel.

Some stencils were created to utilize two steps instead of just one. The Pepsi creation was done in two steps to achieve the two-toned look.

Part of the magic in achieving this 'authentic' look was to stencil direct on the original wood that had about 2 years of exposed normal wear and tear living. Paint splatters, etc created the perfect non-new backdrop for the new look.

Many think I've spent a small fortune on building my stairs out of authentic crates, when the reality really is, they were free. :)
