We meet in the kitchen for communication and therapy, to
laugh and to cry, to celebrate occasions large and small.
At the same time though, we may need time to withdraw,
to be quiet and to concentrate. The arrangement of this
three floor house, located on a slope, meets these contradictory
requirements very well. The kitchen and dining area
quite befit the various activities in the space provided. It is
of equal importance in the “hierarchy” of the house to the
separate living room. The staircase provides the break. A
large terrace with a covered sitting area is adjacent to the
dining table. Large sliding doors with a picture window at
an angle to the living room offer protection from the weather
and bring interior and exterior visually together. The
architectural language is timeless and classic. The actual
house, a white two floor cube, sits on a clearly defined
plinth with garage, granny flat and main entrance, a solution
reflecting the topography of the building. In the interior,
the cream coloured walls unite the light seamless terrazzo
floor, mixed specially for this project, with the wooden
kitchen fronts and the terrace floor, to create an overall
warm friendly atmosphere.
