Kitchen Remodel opens up the House

This home is a single story mid-century modern with large expanses of glass and an open beam ceiling. Alas, the kitchen was confined to a small room and had traditional oak cabinetry. The homeowner wanted to update and create an open flow.

Removing the interior walls and switching the areas for dining and kitchen created a light filled space that responds to the structure of the house. A big beam in the ceiling replaces a bearing wall and visually divides the space between living room and kitchen. The dropped ceiling over the entry extends over the new dining room, subtly defining the spaces without walls. The vaulted ceiling from the original living room extends to the far wall and a fourth triangular window complete the symmetry. The result is spatially organized without solid barriers.

Sleek cabinets and glass tiles enhance the modern interiors. Custom designed lights for a recessed installation are invisible in the ceiling. The island with a 'waterfall' countertop and pendant lights above help define the boundary between the spaces. The warm tones of the walnut floor balance the soft greys and greens in the kitchen. The orange chair adds a pop of color that is picked up in throw pillows, potted plants and table settings.
