Lawrence Court Residence, Philadelphia, PA
The subject townhouse is one of a number of early modern houses built along Lawrence Court in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. The existing house incorporated a small top floor space with a large west facing roof deck. The clients expressed a desire to expand the top floor to incorporate a master suite home office / studio space and an expanded guest suite on the east side. Historic district guidelines imposed following less successul rooftop additions comprised of greenhouse-style sunrooms dictated a more sensitive approach. For this solution, an articulated volume of coated copper and painted hardwood window systems clearly identifies itself as separate from the original structure and breaks down the overall mass of the addition by honoring original masorny openings and parapet walls.
