rough hewn reclaimed wood. This is a great example of mixing old and new.
This modern addition on a more traditional house fuses the two styles. Reclaimed wood and divided space meets an industrial faucet, smooth floor and large doors that open the dining are to the outside.
with a reclaimed wood table adds a certain balance to this room. A beamed ceiling and backdrop of distressed wood wraps the table and chairs in a comfortable vintage modern setting. what reclaimed wood did you use on fireplace - and where did you order from!
Can you use recycled wood as a surround for a gas fireplace? Are there safety codes?
of the wood around the fireplace?
I absolutely love what you have done here with the fireplace and want to reface our terrible brick one and do this with reclaimed wood. I have had trouble finding the appropriate insert and dealing with the codes etc. Questions: 1)
gas or wood burning insert? 2) Which insert is it (make & model if possible)? 3) What codes are required (i.e. distance from insert to combustible material (i.e. the wood). Thanks so much. I am really really trying to do this.
The wood is reclaimed old growth Douglas Fir (regular framing lumber) 2x4's cut in half, and we got it from the Rebuilding Exchange in Chicago. If you live nearby, you should definitely check it out, they have a wealth of reclaimed materials for all kinds of building projects. http://www.rebuildingexchange

What type of wood & color of stain is used here, is it knotty alder?
Isnt it dangerous to have a fireplace surrounded by wood ?
I guess I was unclear in my previous question. I am referring to the top and bottom of horizontal boards - how were they milled? were they just left raw or milled to hide the nails? or were they straight cut so fit together smoothly? I am purchasing barn wood and would love for
material like wood within about 60" yet it appears I have seen many pictures of fireplaces surrounded by wood..we would like to do this is safe.

I am really contemplating paning my wood paneling. Hubby says no way but i am sooo tired of living in the dark. My large family room even has large windows and 2 sky lights. Our house has other brick in other areas so that should stay. Maybe painting a color other than Wise

It was re-claimed from a barn a Mennonite family was dismantling in Southern Ontario, Canada. We then re-planed the 3 unexposed sides for the horizontal siding and re-planed all of the sides for the vertical siding. The whole process was facilitated by The Wood Source here in Ottawa. http://www.wood-source

century-old reclaimed white oak from southwestern Ontario, as well as prefinished aluminum in some areas. "Studies show that this wood will lose around a quarter of an inch in thickness every 100 years, so even though it's 100 years old now, it has many years to go before it needs to be replaced," he says
